도널드 트럼프 대통령은 핵 충돌이라는 끔찍한 위협을 끝낼 기회가 있다면 어떤 대가가 따르더라도 이를 추구해야 한다고 밝혔습니다. 전세계 사람들은 안전과 평화라는 미래를 누려야 한다며 이 때문에 김정은 위원장과 공동성명에 서명한 것이라고 말했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.

트럼프 대통령은 미-북 정상회담이 양국 관계의 새로운 시작으로 기록됐으며 북한과 한국 등 모든 한국 사람들을 미래로 향하게 하는 길을 열었다고 밝혔습니다.

[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “Earlier this week I returned from a historic summit in Singapore where I met with Chairman Kim Jong Un of North Korea. This summit marked a new beginning for relations between the United States and North Korea, and it opened the path to a future for all Koreans, North and South.”

트럼프 대통령은 15일 백악관 유튜브 채널을 통해 공개한 약 3분짜리 영상 메시지에서 이번 주 초 싱가포르에서 북한의 김정은 위원장과 역사적 정상회담을 마치고 돌아왔다며 이같이 말했습니다.

이어 이번 회담은 과거 행정부들의 실패한 접근법과 완전히 단절하게 만들었다며, 과거 접근법들이 실패했음을 거듭 강조했습니다.

[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “The summit also made a clean break from the failed approaches of past administrations, and failed they were. Our meeting was a first time a sitting American president has ever met with a leader of North Korea. Our conversation was open, honest, direct and very very productive, we produced something that is beautiful.”

이번 회담은 미국의 현직 대통령이 북한의 지도자와 처음으로 만난 사례였다는 겁니다. 아울러 대화는 열려 있었고 정직했으며 직접적이고 매우 생산적이었다고 설명했습니다. 또한 아름다운 것을 만들어냈다고 덧붙였습니다.

트럼프 대통령은 회담이 끝날 때 공동성명에 서명을 했다며 김정은 위원장은 이 성명에서 “한반도의 비핵화라는 단호하고 확고한 약속을 재확인한다”고 했다고 강조했습니다.

[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “At the conclusion of the summit we signed a joint statement in which Chairman Kim, quote, ‘reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.’ This is the beginning of the process toward the denuclearization of North Korea, I sometimes say the de-nuking of North Korea, and those are beautiful words. During our conversation I emphasized the tremendous new prosperity, security and opportunity that awaits North Korea when they denuclearize.”

이는 북한의 비핵화로 향하는 절차의 시작이라는 겁니다. 또한 자신은 그 과정을 북한의 ‘디 누킹(de-nuking)’으로 부른다며 이는 아름다운 말이라고 설명했습니다.

아울러 북한이 비핵화한다면 엄청난 새로운 번영과 안전, 그리고 기회가 기다리고 있다는 점을 강조했었다고 덧붙였습니다.

또한 자신이 싱가포르에서 언급했듯 김정은 위원장은 북한 주민들을 위한 굉장한 미래를 붙잡을 기회가 있다고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “As I said in Singapore, Chairman Kim has the chance to seize an incredible future for his people. Anyone can make war, but only the most courageous can make peace. Our world has seen more than enough conflict. If there’s a chance at peace, if there’s a chance to end the horrible threat of nuclear conflict, then we must pursue it at all cost. The people of America, the people of Korea, the people of the world deserve a future of security, and of peace and that is why we signed this joint statement.”

누구나 전쟁을 일으킬 수 있지만 가장 용감한 자만이 화해할 수 있다는 겁니다.

그러면서 전세계는 이미 너무 많은 갈등을 목격했다며 평화의 기회와 핵 충돌이란 끔찍한 위협을 끝낼 기회가 있다면 어떤 대가가 따르더라도 이를 추구해야만 한다고 설명했습니다.

아울러 미국과 남북한, 그리고 전세계 사람들은 안전하고 평화로운 미래를 누려야 마땅하다며 그렇기 때문에 김정은과 자신이 이 공동성명에 서명을 했다고 덧붙였습니다.

트럼프 대통령은 앞으로 수 일에서 수 주, 그리고 수 개월 동안 마이크 폼페오 국무장관이 비핵화 합의를 이행하기 위해 북한과 직접 일을 할 것이라고 말했습니다.

[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “In the coming days, and weeks and months, Secretary Pompeo will be working directly with North Korea to implement the denuclearization deal. In the meantime sanctions will remain in place, we know that there is a great deal of work ahead but peace is always worth that effort.”

그 동안 대북 제재는 유지될 것이고 많은 일이 남아 있지만 평화는 언제나 이런 노력을 할 가치가 있다고 강조했습니다.

아울러 미국은 매우 열심히 노력해왔고 자신이 싱가포르에도 다녀왔다며 매 순간이 가치가 있었다고 설명했습니다.

[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “We have been working very hard. I made the trip, it was worth every second. It was an incredible event. The people of Asia feel safe, and right now the people from all over the world feel much safer than days before I was president. We’re doing a good job, we’re working very hard and we’re going to produce, and it’s all going to happen. Thank you. God bless you. God Bless America.”

이번 회담은 굉장한 행사였다는 겁니다.

이어 아시아 사람들은 안전하다고 느끼고 있고 이제 전세계 사람들이 자신이 대통령이 되기 전보다 훨씬 더 안전하다고 느낀다고 말했습니다.

아울러 미국은 훌륭하고 또 매우 열심히 일하고 있다며 (무언가를) 생산해 낼 것이고 이 모든 일은 일어날 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
