워싱턴발 – 美연방국회 존 맥케인 상원의원은 5월 20일, 북한이 남한해군 천안함을 격침시킨 사건에 관하여 다음과 같은 담화를 발표하였다:

“남한정부는, 남한해군 함정 천안함을 침몰시키고 남한해군 수병 46명의 목숨을 앗아간 참사의 범인은 북한정권이라고, 한 점의 의혹도 있을 수 없게, 증거를 제시하였다. 한국은 미국에게 사활이 걸린 우방이다. 이런 우방에 대한 북한의 공격은 절대로 용납할 수 없고, 엄중하고 즉각적인 응징이 필요하다. 본인은, 세계평화를 좇는 모든 국가들에게 남한과의 결속을 공표할 것과 북한의 무력도발에 적절한 응징으로 대처할 것을 촉구한다. 특히, 동아시아의 안보에 관하여 이제까지 (무책임하게 북한 편을 들어온: 역자 주) 중화인민공화국에게 앞으로는 보다 더 책임있게 행동하기를 촉구한다.

Washington, D.C. ­– U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) made the following statement today regarding North Korea’s sinking of the Cheonan:

“South Korea presented evidence today that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that North Korea was responsible for the sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean Navy ship, which claimed the lives of 46 Korean sailors. North Korea’s aggression against a vital ally of the United States is completely unacceptable, and the consequences must be serious and immediate. I urge the community of responsible nations to show solidarity with South Korea and to respond appropriately to North Korea’s belligerence. I especially urge the People’s Republic of China to work more responsibly than it has thus far for the security and stability of East Asia.”

BROWNBACK CONDEMNS NORTH KOREAN REGIME FOR DEADLY ATTACK ON SOUTH KOREAN SHIP

Says he is disturbed by results of South Korean investigation

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Sam Brownback today condemned the North Korean regime for its attack on a South Korean naval warship. Forty-six sailors were killed in the attack.

“The North Korean regime must be held responsible for its despicable act,” said Brownback. “The United States should act quickly to re-list North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism and North Korea should face immediate, multi-lateral sanctions. North Korea is a threat to its neighbors, the East Asian region and the rest of the world and must be held accountable for its provocative actions.”
