역자의 말: 참으로 신기하다. 어제 저녁, 필자는 영화 [어메이징 그레이스]와 그 주인공 윌리엄 윌버포스에 관한 짧은 글을 계시판에 올렸었는데, 오늘 오래간만에 필자가 평소 존경하는 샘 브라운백 미연방 상원의원의 웹사이트에 들렸더니, 바로 어제 날자로 브라운백 상원의원이 윌리엄 윌버포스에 대한 공개 찬사를 발표했다. 도무지 우연같지 않은 느낌이다. 샘 브라운백 의원은 미연방국회에서 북한인권의 참피언이다. [북한인권전시회]를 제일 처음 미연방국회 건물에서 열어준 분이 브라운백 의원이다. 2003년 10월, 황장엽 선생이 방미했을 때도 황선생을 따로 만나 장시간 면담한 상원의원은 브라운백 의원밖에 없었다. [북한인권법안]의 모체라 할 수있던 [북한자유법안]을 기초한 분도 샘 브라운백 상원의원이다. 2005년 7월에는 워싱턴 [북한인권 국제회의]에서 브라운백 의원과 김문수 의원 두 분이 나란히 앉아 있었다. 다음은 브라운백 의원의 [어메이징 그레이스] 관람후기이다. 2007년 3월 7일/남신우 씀 샘 브라운백 연방상원의원이 영국 노예해방운동가를 우리 시대의 영웅이라고 불렀음. 2007년 3월 6일(화) 오늘날 우리는 영웅을 필요로 한다. 우리에게 선해질 수 있는 길을 보여주고 인간정신의 위대한 가능성을 생각하게 해줄 그런 영웅이 필요하다. 나에게는 다행히 그런 영웅이 여럿 있지만, 최근 특히 유별나게 생각나는 영웅 한 분이 있다. 잘 알려져 있지는 않지만 우리들이 사는 현시대에 가장 가슴에 와닿는 영웅이다. 바로 영국 국회의원이었던 윌리엄 윌버포스란 분이 우리 시대에 맞는 영웅이다. 윌리엄 윌버포스는 대영제국에서 1759년 태어났다. 당시 그의 나라는 지금의 미국과 상당히 비슷한 위치에 있었다. 영국은 세계 초강대국이었으나 안으로부터 정신이 썩고 도덕이 무너지는 위기에 처해 있었다. 그 중에서도 제일 나뻤던 것이 바로 노예제도란 악이었다. 그러나 영국민들은 다행히 자신들에게 무엇이 제일 중요한가를 이해하고 있었다. 선을 따르지 않으면 나라가 무너질 것이란 사실을 이해하고 있었다. 윌리엄 윌버포스는 1780년 두 가지 큰 목표를 바라보며 영국국회에 입성했다: 노예제도의 폐지와 영국인들의 문화를 개조하겠다는 대단한 목표였다. 그는 첫번째 목표에 신명을 기우려 투쟁했고, 우리는 오늘날 그의 투쟁을 감사한 마음으로 기리고 있다. 윌버포스의 노예제도 폐지운동은 인류역사를 바꿔놓은 전기轉機였다. 윌리엄 윌버포스 덕분에 영국민들은 그 끔찍한 노예교역을 악으로 보게 되었고, 결국 노예제도를 폐지할 수 있었다. 그는 옳은 것을 위해 싸웠고, 목소리를 낼 수 없는 사람들을 위하여 나섰다. 당시 말할 수 없는 역경에도 불구하고, 영국민 마음 속 깊이 잠재했던 선을 일깨웠고, 그래서 영국민들은 승리할 수 있었던 것이다. 두번째 윌리엄 윌버포스가 영국국회에서 신명을 바쳐 일한 것은 영국인들의 문화를 개조하는 일이었다. 그는 영국이 위대한 사업을 하려면 영국민들이 선해져야 한다고 확신했다. 노예제도란 악과 싸우려면 옳은 것을 장려하고 그른 것을 배척하는 문화가 있어야 한다고 확신했다. 영국민에게는 자발적 희생정신과 딴 사람들의 존엄을 위하여 싸울 수 있는 정신이 필요했다. 19세기 대영제국은, 지금 미국과 마찬가지로, 당시 그들 자신과 전 인류를 위한 위대한 목표에 상응하는 문화가 필요했다. 윌버포스는 우리가 오늘 날 직면한 또 하나의 어려운 문제에도 좋은 귀감이 되었다. 바로 우리들의 공적公的 광장에서 종교를 어떻게 바라볼 것인가 하는 문제로서, 그는 자신의 믿음을 자신의 공적활동에 소중한 덕으로 생각했지, 나쁜 악습으로 생각하지 않았다. 그는 독실한 기독교인으로서, “이웃을 사랑하라”는 말씀을 그대로 실천한 사람이엇다. 인간의 존엄성이란 거대한 명제를 갖고 그는 세상의 모든 남녀 인간들을 위하여 한 사람의 예외도 없이 투쟁했던 사람이었다. 그는 감옥소를 개혁하는 일, 약한 자와 핍박 받는 사람들을 위하여 투쟁했고, 그 무엇보다도 저 사악한 노예제도를 폐지하기 위하여 자신의 평생을 바친 사람이다. 그는 오로지 인간의 존엄성에 대한 비전을 위하여 일했으며, 그의 믿음이 공적 광장에서도 그를 그렇게 위대한 영웅으로 만든 것이다. 그래서 우리 모두가 그의 용기와 믿음에 감사하게 된 것이다. 윌버포스에 관하여 마지막으로 말하고 싶은 것은, 오늘 날 우리가 편협한 마음으로 서로 싸우는 것과는 달리, 윌버포스는 모든 파당적 행위를 거부했었다. 그는 우리에게, 파당적 싸움에서 벗어나 원칙을 따르라는 교훈을 자신의 실제적 활동으로 보여줬다. 어떤 원칙에 기초한 가치를 대표하는 지도자만이 - 모든 면에서 완전 합의를 끌어낼 수는 없다 하더라도. 국민들의 합의를 끌어낼 수 있다. 원칙을 믿는 지도자는 단순히 자기 정당이라고 해서 편을 가르지 않고, 자기 개인이나 자기 정당의 이득만 생각하는 것이 아니라, 전국민들에게 이익이 되는 것을 추구한다. 윌리엄 윌버포스는 이런 원칙의 지도자였다. 윌리엄 윌버포스와 그의 위대한 업적이 바로 [어메이징 그레이스]의 이야기이다. 약하고 소외 당한 사람들을 위하여 싸운 영웅적 지도자, 그의 용감한 실천적 삶을 그린 이야기, 우리들의 영웅 윌리엄 윌버포스의 이야기가 바로 어메이징 그레이스다. Brownback op-ed on William Wilberforce Calls British abolitionist a hero Tuesday, March 6, 2007 The world today is in need of heroes. We need those who show us the path to be good and reflect the great potential of the human spirit. While I'm glad to say I have many heroes, I think often these days of one in particular. Little known but most relevant for our present day, the British parliamentarian William Wilberforce is indeed a hero for our times. William Wilberforce was born in Great Britain in 1759. His country in that day was very much like the United States in our own time. They were a world superpower but were threatened at home by a coarsening of culture and fading morale. Worst of all they were beset by the evil of slavery. They understood well the vital lesson however - if they would not strive for goodness they would surely lose their greatness. William Wilberforce entered the British parliament in 1780 with two monumental goals: the abolition of slavery and the reformation of culture. The first, for which he worked tirelessly and is now so gratefully remembered, marks a turning point in human history. Thanks in large part to William Wilberforce the British people stood up against the horrors of the slave trade and eventually abolished slavery itself. He fought for what was right and stood up for the voiceless. Against all odds, the goodness deep in the hearts of the British people won out. The second great object that occupied Wilberforce's energy in parliament was the reformation of the culture. He understood that in order for Britain to do great things they needed to be good. To combat the great evil of slavery they needed a culture that encouraged what is right and discouraged what is wrong. They needed a people willing to sacrifice and to fight for the dignity of another. Great Britain of the nineteenth century, not unlike America today, needed a culture worthy of their great goals for their people and for all humanity. Wilberforce is a helpful guide in another difficult question of our day, the place of religion in the public square. He was a person of faith who rightly saw his faith as a value not a vice for public life. He was a committed Christian who took seriously the instruction to "love thy neighbor." It was his notion of the immensity of human dignity that led him to fight for men and women everywhere and without exception. He worked for prison reform, to help the weak and downtrodden, and most of all to end the abhorrent institution of slavery. Seeking to impose nothing but only to propose a vision of human dignity, his faith committed him to justice in the public square. We are a grateful world for his witness and courage. Finally, Wilberforce is a model to reject the partisanship that often enters debates today. His example makes clear that it is principle that combats partisanship. Leaders who stand for a particular set of values - even if there will not be total agreement on every point - represent the surest hope for civil discourse. Principled leaders do not divide simply on party lines, seek not their own good or that of a particular party, but the good of the whole people. William Wilberforce is the model of a leader with conviction. William Wilberforce and his monumental achievement is indeed the story of Amazing Grace. It is the story of heroic leadership and courageous action on behalf of the weak and marginalized. It is the story of William Wilberforce, a hero for our times.
