Remarks by Suzanne Scholte

Chairman, North Korea Freedom Coalition and President, Defense Forum Foundation

November 15, 2007

It is a great honor for me to speak at this press conference on behalf of the North Korea Freedom Coalition. I am here to show our solidarity with the members of the Japanese Diet and the Rescue Movement and to pledge our continued cooperation in working for the resolution of the heinous crimes of Kim Jong-il in his abduction of citizens from different countries around the world.

We are a coalition of NGOs and individuals that come from many countries including North Korea, South Korea, Japan, America and Europe. We are very proud of the fact that every North Korean defector organization is a member of our coalition, as well as the South Korean and Japanese NGOs that are focused on resolving the abduction issues and the Korean War POW issue. The Japanese Rescue Movement (AFVKN and NARKN) has always stood with us in advocating for the freedom and human rights of the North Korean people and we are proud to stand with them today to affirm that the issue of the abductions of Japanese citizens, Korean citizens, and American permanent resident Rev. Kim Dong Shik, must be resolved before any consideration is given to removing North Korea from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.

Our coalition comes from many different religious faiths and political ideologies, but we share one common view: that we must stand in solidarity for human rights for the many victims of this regime. We must uphold the freedom, human rights and dignity of the North Korean people, as well as the those from other countries who are victims of this regime.

We will be judged by history on whether we ignored Kim Jong-il¡¯s crimes against humanity – crimes against the North Korean people and citizens of other nations.

The fact that this regime continues to hold citizens from other countries - abductees from many nations and even Korean War POWs that fought for South Korea¡¯s freedom – is unconscionable. Today North Koreans are continuing to be worked to death in political prison camps and intentionally starved to death as Kim Jong-il has used our food aid as a weapon against his own people. To ignore this suffering and to close our eyes to it for some false peace is a betrayal of everything we stand for as free people.

Members of the Japanese Diet and Rescue Movement came to Washington, DC, the Capitol of the Free World, to stand up for this fundamental principle: that these citizens must be allowed to come home and those that this regime has murdered, as is feared of Rev. Kim, must be accounted for before any progress can be made.

We are proud and honored to join with the people of Japan who recognize this fundamental truth because they have stood up for their loved ones who were abducted by this regime. Furthermore, the Japanese government has stood up for North Korean refugees who have fled Kim Jong-il¡¯s hell. Japanese citizens have formed NGOs like Life Funds for North Korean Refugees and RENK to save lives. Members of the Japanese Diet, like Congressman Masuhura Nakagawa, have led the way internationally in working with Parliamentarians of other countries to stop the brutal and violent repatriation of North Korean refugees by the government of China. In recent years, Japan has appointed Kyoko Nakayama to be a Special Advisor for the Abduction Issue, Ambassador Fumiko Saiga as the Special Envoy for North Korean Human Rights and has began an annual week to focus on North Korean human rights.

One day Kim Jong-il¡¯s regime will be gone. There will be an accounting and history will judge us on whether we closed our eyes to the suffering or upheld the abiding principles by which we live as a free people. Japan must stay strong and continue to champion the release of the abductees and must continue its efforts to help the North Korean people. Right now you are their greatest friend because the government that should care the most, the government of South Korea, has closed their eyes and their ears ignoring the cries of their suffering brothers and sisters. And the government that has in the past stood as a beacon of hope, the United States, has changed its course and is following the same failed path that only led to death for millions more North Koreans so that the aid that we sent to feed the people was instead used to develop nuclear weapons.

Thank you for your commitment to human rights. We stand with you until the abductees are free and home with their loved ones, and the North Korean people are no longer enslaved but free to enjoy human rights and dignity.
