금년 북한 자유 주간 행사는 지금껏 저희가 계획했던 것 중 열정과 노력이 가장 많이 집약되었던 행사였습니다. 특히, 탈북자를 대표하는 21명의 탈북자들이 이번 행사에 참여해주셨습니다. 첫 번째 시간에는 전 세계 국가와 미주 지역에 있는 중국 대사관과 영사관 앞에서 탈북자들에 대한 폭력적 대우를 규탄하는 행사와 북한 인권과 탈북자를 위한 Capitall Hill 대회가 Capitol Hill에서 있었습니다. 지난 행사 동안에는 시간이 많이 소비되는 이유로 이러한 이벤트를 대체하곤 했습니다. 그러나 올해 들어, 탈북자들의 대한 중국의 조치가 더욱 강화되고 기근으로 인한 아사자가 발생하고 있다는 보고가 증가하고 있습니다. 더불어 북한 주민들에게 근접할 수 있는 능력 또한 늘고 있습니다. 따라서 이러한 이벤트는 어떤 것보다 더 우선적으로 실행되어야 한다고 생각했습니다.

 

북한 자유 주간에 참여한 탈북자들은 이번 행사가 제일 좋았었다고 합니다. 공공 이벤트, 개인적인 미팅, 미 국민들로부터 받은 대단한 애정은 그들에게 큰 의미가 되었으며 그들이 북한에 자유와 인권을 가져다주는 일을 함에 있어 큰 힘을 얻었다고 합니다.

 

강력한 증언으로 북한 자유 주간을 마무리 해주었던 한 탈북자는 이번 행사에 참여하는 것을 처음엔 꺼려하였습니다. 그 이유는 북한에서 살았을 때 들었던 미국에 대한 끔찍한 이야기들 때문이었습니다. 정말, 미국에 가면 위험할 것이기에 두려워했다고 합니다. 북한 자유 주간 행사를 마친 후, 그녀는 이런 글을 남겼습니다.

 

“감사합니다. 북한 자유 주간에 저를 초대해주셔서 정말 감사드립니다. 여러분은 저에게 세계를 보여주었고, 저를 곁에서 지켜주며 여러분의 사랑과 열정을 제게 보여주셨습니다. 미국에 가려고 하는 저를 말렸던 저의 친구들도 지금은 워싱턴에서 있었던 일들, 이야기들을 듣기 위해 저의 집을 찾아옵니다. 나의 친구들인 북한 주민들에게 자유와 인권을 어떻게 가져다 줄 수 있을까에 대한 생각뿐입니다.”

 

이번 행사에 참여했던 버지니아에서 온 고등학생, Annette Lee는 다음과 같은 말로 2008 북한 자유 주간에 대한 미국인들의 생각을 요약해 주었습니다.

 

“이번 행사에 참여하면서 저는 제가 지금까지 한 제일 잘한 일 중 하나였습니다. 저는 많은 것을 배웠고 저의 믿음을 더욱 굳힐 수 있었습니다.”

 

2008 북한 자유 주간 행사를 성황리에 마칠 수 있도록 도와주셨던 분들에 대한 감사를 전하며 그분들의 노고에 대한 소개를 드립니다. 특별히 모든 방면에서 저를 도와주었던 Jane Yang에세 감사드립니다. 이 분은 공공 행사들에 필요한 모든 것에 도움을 주셨습니다. 평양 음악 선교단에 대한 숙소와 교통편을 제공해주신 Heemoon Lee 목사님께도 감사를 드립니다. STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

 

Laura and I send greetings to all those observing North Korea Freedom Week. I am deeply concerned about the grave human rights conditions in North Korea, especially the denial of universal freedoms of speech, press, religion, assembly, and association, and restrictions on freedom of movement and workers’ rights. I have met in the Oval Office with some of the brave individuals who have escaped from that country. I am deeply concerned by the stories of divided families, harsh conditions, and suffering. The United States stands with the North Korean people in their call for freedom. We believe it is every person’s basic right to live in freedom and dignity. We will continue to support the North Korean people as they strive to achieve the rights and freedoms to which they are entitled as human beings. We look forward to the moment when we can celebrate the blessings of liberty with the North Korean people.
