On behalf of Helen Kim, it gives me great pleasure to report to you that her husband, American citizen Steve Kim of Huntington, New York, is now free having been released from prison in China where he has been held since September 23, 2003 -- FOUR YEARS for the "crime" of helping starving men, women and children, North Korean refugees.

In most civilized countries, a person of Kim's compassion and concern for his fellow man would have been lauded and praised and admired. This American businessman, who traveled frequently to China, saw people suffering and in great need, and because he was a Christian, he could not turn his back on them. Thus, working with the support of his home church, Good Neighbor Community Church on Long Island, he raised funds to provide food and shelter to North Korean refugees until they were healthy enough to travel to South Korea and then he helped them make their way to freedom. Note that these North Koreans have automatic citizenship under the South Korean constitution, so he was simply assisting them to go to a country where they could safely resettle. Note that the United Nations Special Rapporteur on North Korea has determined that North Koreans who have fled to China are indeed "refugees", not "economic migrants" as China claims.

대부분의 문명화된 국가에서는 동포에 대한 깊은 동정심과 배려를 지닌 김 씨란 사람에 대해 칭찬과 칭송을 해왔으며 또한 존경해왔습니다. 재미한인 사업가인 김 씨는 중국을 자주 여행하는 동안에 도움이 절실히 필요했던 고통받는 탈북자들을 목격한 뒤로 기독교인인 그는 그들을 외면할 수 없었습니다. 그래서 롱 아일랜드에 위치한 그의 출석교회인 Good Neighbor Community Church에서 후원자로 일을 시작하면서 탈북자들이 남한으로 이동하기에 충분한 만큼 건강을 회복할 때까지 그들에게 음식과 주거지를 제공하기 위해 기금을 조성했으며, 그들이 자유를 찾아 갈 수 있도록 힘껏 도왔습니다. 이들 탈북자들은 남한의 헌법에 따라 자동적으로 시민권을 받을 수 있다는 것을 생각해보면 김 씨는 그들이 안전하게 재정착할 수 있는 곳으로 갈 수 있도록 최선을 다해 도와주었던 것입니다. 또한 북한에 대한 UN의 특별 보고에서는 중국으로 탈북한 사람들이 중국에서 주장하는 것처럼 경제적 이주민인 아닌 난민자로 규정하였습니다.

Steve Kim's compassionate actions in helping with the North Korean refugee crisis caused the government of China to hunt him down and jail him charging him with illegally transporting aliens as we was helping North Korean refugees to attempt to cross the border. Note others who come to mind guilty of the same "crime": Raoul Wallenburg, Harriet Tubman.

스티브 킴의 북한난민 현실을 도우려는 배려 깊은 행동은 중국정부로 하여금 그를 체포하게 했고 우리가 탈북자들이 국경선을 넘을 수 있도록 도왔던 것처럼 불법 외국인 수송이란 죄명으로 그를 수감시켰습니다. 이것과 똑같은 “범죄행위”를 범한 Raoul Wallenburg와 Harriet Tubman과 같은 분들이 떠오릅니다.

To my knowledge, there is no humanitarian worker -- American, South Korean, or Japanese -- who has been arrested for this crime and served a longer sentence than Steve Kim. South Korean Choi Young Hun, released last November, came very close, and Choi was severely tortured and abused and especially mocked in prison for his Christian beliefs. We believe that Steve was held longer because the Chinese unfairly recorded him and then aired his remarks on television before his trial. In his remarks he stated that he did nothing wrong, he was only helping suffering people and that if God called him to do again, he would do it again.

제가 알기로는 스티브 김보다 이러한 범행으로 체포되어서 오랫동안 수감생활을 한 인도주의자는 없습니다. 그 어떤 미국인도, 한국인도, 일본인도 말입니다. 남한 사람인 최영훈 씨는 지난 11월에 석방되었는데 그는 혹독한 고문을 당했으며 학대받고 그의 신앙을 탓하며 감옥에서 그는 짓밟혔다고 합니다. 스티브 김은 더 오랫동안 복역해야만 했습니다. 왜냐 하면, 중국이 그에 대한 불공정한 보도를 했으며 김 씨에 대한 재판이 있기도 전에 TV를 통해 그의 의견을 보도했습니다. 그가 진술한 바에 따르면 그는 잘못한 일이 전혀 없으며 그는 단지 고통받는 사람들을 도왔을 뿐이고 하나님께서 다시 그 일을 하도록 부르신다면 그 일을 다시 할 것이라고 했습니다.

Furthermore, he was told by his jailers in the early days of his imprisonment that he was a "political prisoner" and as efforts were made to focus attention on his case that he was an "American spy."

또한, 교도관에 말에 의하면 김 씨는 수감 초기 당시 그는 정치범이었으나 김 씨 사건에 관심을 집중시키기 위한 노력으로 그는 미국 간첩으로 간주되었다고 합니다.

Fortunately, and perhaps because he was an American citizen, Steve Kim did not experience torture and abuse, but he did experience four years of imprisonment in harsh conditions -- four years of unjust and unfair imprisonment -- for caring and acting for among the world's most suffering people, North Koreans. His family, wife, Helen, and children, Eric, Lisa, and Charles, suffered greatly over these past four years not understanding why their husband and father could be treated this way.

다행인 것은 아마도 김 씨가 미국 시민권자이기 때문에 그는 고문과 학대를 당하지 않을 수 있었지만 열악한 환경 속에서 세상에서 최악의 고통을 당하고 있는 북한 주민들을 위해 노력하고 그들을 돌봐준 이유만으로 4년 동안 불공정하고 부당한 수감생활을 해야만 했습니다. 그의 가족, 부인인 헬렌 그리고 그의 아이들인 에릭, 리사, 그리고 찰스는 왜 자신의 남편이 그리고 자신들의 아버지가 그렇게 취급 받아야만 했는지 전혀 이해할 수 없는 지난 4년이라는 시간 동안 엄청난 고통을 받아야만 했습니다.

From the regular visits Helen made to the Chinese prison to see Steve, we know that his faith sustained him and the prayers and support of his family and Good Neighbor Community Church. We also know that he is going to have some amazing stories to share with us now that he is free!
