오는 4월 25일부터 5월 1일까지 서울에서 열리는 북한자유주간 행사와 관련해 이 행사의 주관자이며 서울평화상 수상자인 슈잔 솔티 여사가 남한 내 탈북자들에게 보내는 공개서한을 보내왔다. “디펜스포럼” 회장, 미국 워싱턴의 “북한자유연합” 대표이기도 한 수잔 솔티 여사는 본 방송과의 전화 전화를 통해 “지금까지 확정된 행사 일정과 대한민국 국민들에게 보내는 호소문, 의회와 정부에 보내는 협조공문들을 곧 보낼 예정이다”고 밝혔다. 아래는 “친애하는 형제자매님들께” 라는 제목으로 보내온 수잔 솔티 여사의 편지.

Dear Brothers and Sisters:

친애하는 형제자매님들께:

For the first time since 2004, North Korea Freedom Week will be held in Seoul, South Korea from April 25 until May 1, 2010. This is your week, it is a week to promote and take a stand for the freedom, human rights, and dignity of the North Korean people.

2004년 이후 해마다 미국 워싱턴에서 열려오던 북한자유주간 행사가 올 2010년에는 4월25일부터 5월1일까지 최초로 대한민국 서울에서 개최됩니다. 북한자유주간은 여러분의 주간이며, 북한주민들의 자유, 인권, 그리고 존엄성을 고취시키고 이를 위한 많은 사람들의 강력한 지지 및 의지를 보여주기 위한 주간입니다.

Freedom - because everyone is deserving of Freedom and no “great leader” or “dear leader” has the right to deny what God has granted to each of us as human beings;

자유 – 모든 사람은 자유를 누릴 권리가 있습니다. 그 어떤 “위대하신 수령님”도 하나님이 각각의 인간에게 주신 그러한 권리를 박탈할 권한은 없습니다.

Human Rights - because North Koreans are fully deserving of the human rights enjoyed by free people around the world and yet, North Koreans are the most suffering and persecuted people on Earth;

인권 – 북한 사람들도 다른 자유로운 세계인들과 더불어 인권을 마음껏 즐길 권리가 있음에도 불구하고 아직도, 북한 주민들은 지구상에서 가장 큰 고통을 겪고 박해 당하고 있습니다.

Dignity – because no one should treat North Koreans with indifference or discrimination simply because they were denied the advantages of those of us who were born in freedom.

존엄 – 이 세상 그 어떤 누구도 북한 사람들이 우리와 같이 자유 속에서 태어난 이 복지를 누리지 못했다고 해서 그 사람들을 무관심으로 대하거나 차별대우 할 수는 없습니다.

This is your week and we need to hear your voices – the voices of the 17,000 strong North Koreans currently living in South Korea.

북한자유주간은 여러분의 주간인 만큼 우리는 여러분의 목소리를 듣는 것이 절실합니다. 현재 남한에 거주하고 계시는 1만 7천명 이상의 북한 사람들 목소리 말입니다.

This is your week to come together with the South Koreans who share your vision of a free and prosperous Korea where there is no division, but one united nation living under the blessings of democracy with respect for human rights and dignity.

북한자유주간은 여러분들이 생각하는 인권과 존엄을 존중하는 민주주의의 축복 아래, 분단이 아닌 하나된 자유롭고 번영하는 한국에 대한 비전을 남한 사람들과 나눌 수 있는 기회가 될 것입니다.

Let us all come together with one voice to declare North Korea Freedom on April 28 at the North Korea Freedom Week Rally. April 28 marks the anniversary of the first North Korea Freedom Day, which at the time was the largest gathering outside of the Korean peninsula to call for North Korea’s freedom. Let’s make April 28, 2010, the largest gathering on the Korean peninsula to call for North Korea’s freedom.

4월28일 북한자유주간 집회에서, 우리 함께 모여 북한 자유에 대해 하나된 목소리로 선언합시다. 4월28일은 북한의 자유를 위해 한반도 밖에서 가장 많은 사람들이 모여 북한자유의 날을 선포한 기념일입니다. 이제, 2010년 4월28일에는 북한의 자유를 위해 한반도 내에서 가장 많은 군중들이 모여 가장 큰 집회를 할 수 있게 해주십시오.

Let us all come together on our knees before God on April 30 at the North Korea Freedom Week Prayer Vigil to plead that God will make His move and free His children suffering in North Korea. I first became involved in this issue in 1996 after asking God to break my heart for what was breaking His heart. This simple prayer is what led me to become involved in doing all that I can to help the North Korean people, because God broke my heart for North Korea. It has been a very hard struggle for you and everyone who desires North Korea’s freedom. We cannot separate this work from God, because it comes from God. What is happening in North Korea is breaking God’s heart.

4월30일 북한자유주간 기도집회에서는 다같이 모여 하나님 앞에 무릎 꿇고 고통 받는 북한의 아들딸들을 위해 이제는 하나님께서 역사하시고 당신의 자녀들을 해방시켜 주시기를 간곡히 청합시다. 저는 1996년 하나님께 당신의 마음을 아프게 하는 것을 저도 똑같이 느낄 수 있게 해달라고 기도한 이후 북한 인권 운동에 뛰어들게 되었습니다. 이 작고 평범한 기도를 통해 하나님은 저를 북한 사람들을 위해 도움이 될 수 있는 이 모든 일에 뛰어들게 하셨습니다. 북한의 자유를 갈망하는 분들에게 이 일은 매우 어려운 투쟁이란 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 이 모든 것들이 하나님에서 비롯되었기에, 우리는 이러한 일을 하나님으로부터 분리할 수 없습니다. 지금 북한에서 벌어지고 있는 일들은 하나님의 마음을 아프게 하고 있습니다.
